Who are we?

Phoenix UnitPhoenix Unit is a ten-bed inpatient unit. People seeking admission have chosen abstinence as their preferred treatment option.

The Housing Program accommodates residents of Northern Sydney Central Coast Health Service who need supported accommodation during their recovery from alcohol and other drug dependence.

What do we do?

One of the main objectives of the Phoenix Unit is to ensure that the client's management is as consistent as possible from referral to discharge. Treatment includes the following:

  • Introduction to 12 step philosophy
  • Educational groups
  • Case management including Individual counselling
  • Attending AA/NA/MA/GA meetings during treatment
  • Developing a support network within the 12 step fellowships
  • Inpatient consultation as indicated
  • Health promotion groups
  • Family information groups
  • Outpatient group

Housing Program: We aim to provide a residential environment that supports and facilitates the maintenance of abstinence and the development of a healthier lifestyle.
The program gives priority to applicants who are homeless and/or have a history of high dependency. Prospective residents have preferably completed a rehabilitation program after detoxification and are seeking a safe, supportive environment in which to effect a re-entry into community living. Treatment includes the following:

  • Residents are expected to attend weekly house group meetings conducted by housing supervisor
  • Daily attendance at AA/NA meetings
  • Weekly counselling within Area D&A community counselling services
  • The length of stay in the houses is four months and continued residency is assessed during monthly reviews by house supervisor in conjunction with the resident

How you can access our service

The Phoenix Unit seeks to make access to treatment as straightforward as possible. The initial contact for referral agencies and clients seeking admission is made by telephoning the Phoenix Unit directly. Clients are informed of the service and criteria for admission as follows:

  • Client name will be registered in intake book and they are to ring each Monday between 9am and 1pm until a space is available on waiting list, at which time a telephone assessment will take place
  • Encourage clients to contact counselling services and attend self-help groups for support before admission
  • If clients are dual diagnoses, they are to be informed that the Medical Officer will make contact with them and assess their suitability for admission
  • Once assessed for waiting list admission will be within 1- 4 weeks if client meets criteria
