The Curran Ageing Research Unit was established within the
Rehabilitation and Aged Care Service in 2001. The unit has participated in a number of international multi-centred clinical drug trials and locally conducted studies.
The unit is actively involved in searching for a “cure” or a successful treatment for Alzheimer’s disease
and other dementias.
Who are we?
The Curran Ageing Research Unit, a team of senior medical and nursing staff working in
the Rehabilitation and Aged Care Service at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital.

What do we do?
The Research Team participates in international research for several types of dementia,
including Alzheimers Disease, Vascular Dementia and dementia associated with Parkinson’s
Disease.
Currently we are conducting several different trials, all for patients with Alzheimer’s
disease. If you would like to know what is involved you might like to read our fact sheet “Why join a research study?”.
All studies are approved by Northern Sydney Health Human Research Ethics Committee
and are closely monitored by independent auditors. The Research Team will assess your past
medical history, general health, memory and current medications. If you are selected for a
study you will be required to return to the clinic at regular intervals. All participants
need a study partner such as your wife, husband or close relative who lives with you.
Studies range from 9 weeks to 18 months in duration.
How you can access our service
Referral is usually made through the doctor or nurse you see in the Memory Clinic at the
Bernard Curran Unit. You may also refer yourself directly to the study coordinator to discuss
your suitability for a particular study. We have information available on our current studies.

What are our hours?
The study coordinator is available to take your inquires Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm.
Voice mail facilities are available so that you can leave a message. Research clinic visits
are currently conducted on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
