Questions?Did you know that: hearing loss is the second most prevalent chronic disabling disorder? This fact sheet covers important questions and answers about hearing

Questions?Did you know that: In children, only 50% of those with a congenital hearing loss will have an identifiable risk factor?

Hearing loss in children is often not questioned until delay in speech and language development is noticed.

Questions?Did you know that: For all ages, unidentified and unmanaged hearing impairment impacts widely on all aspects of life?

Effects are not restricted to education, and/or to family and social relationships. There is evidence that unmanaged hearing loss can result in significant under-employment.

Questions?Did you know that: At age 65, one third of people will have significant hearing difficulty, with incidence increasing with increasing age?

There is evidence that unmanaged hearing impairment leads to depression, and to greater dependency, with associated social and community costs.

Questions?Did you know that: For older people in supported care, the incidence of significant hearing loss increases to 85 to 95%?

Hearing loss can be, and is, mistaken to be confusion/dementia. Subsequent management errors, as well as being inappropriate for the individual, are often unnecessarily costly for the community.

Remember:

For children, and for those with potentially treatable conditions, early identification is essential.

For older people needing hearing aids, whether or not they are eligible for the Federal Government hearing aid program, there are also increasing commercial pressures. Choose an audiologist who will provide independent advice regarding individually appropriate hearing rehabilitation options.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE THAT HEARING CAN BE TESTED FROM BIRTH.

THE APPROPRIATE TIME TO REFER, FOR ANY AGE, IS WHEN A QUESTION ABOUT HEARING IS RAISED.
