ABOUT THE PROJECT |
| |
| |
The new $1.125 billion Royal North Shore Hospital and Community Health Services (RNS) Redevelopment Project will consolidate 53 outdated buildings on the RNS campus into impressive purpose-built facilities that can expand to meet future healthcare needs. |
| |
The redevelopment will ensure that the Hospital's long tradition of care continues into the next generation and beyond with contemporary new facilities to support the delivery of best practice healthcare. It will: - Create new facilities to support patient-centred care and help us improve every patient's journey through our health care system
- Provide excellent therapeutic environments that promote well-being as well as treating illness, injury and disease
- Ensure our new facilities can adapt to new clinical practices and emerging technologies
- Help us attract and retain valuable health care staff by creating healthy, safe, pleasant and professionally satisfying work environments
- Support excellence in teaching and research, as well as in clinical care
- Improve the public domain by creating pleasant, pedestrian friendly outdoor environments with better links to the local business district, St Leonards Railway Station, buses and shops.
The completed redevelopment will have a total of 730 beds (plus 30 bassinettes). |
| |
| |
The redevelopment will deliver a new hospital building on the eastern side of Reserve Road with: |
| |
- Inpatient beds for medical and surgical patients
|
- Additional chemotherapy and renal dialysis chairs
|
- Outpatient (ambulatory care) areas
|
- A new Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre
|
- Enhanced diagnostic services and new clinical and information technology
|
- A total of 29 procedure and operating rooms.
|
| |
| |
The new Main Hospital Building will be relatively low rise, with innovative colour-coded internal spaces to help people navigate the hospital environment. |

The design maximises local views, light and space to create a welcoming, healing environment, while the compact footprint ensures that every department is within two minutes walk of the main lifts. |
| |
It will include new commercial and retail areas for the convenience of staff, patients and visitors. The new Main Hospital Building will completely replace the current `Brown Building', which will be demolished at a later stage for further redevelopment. |
| |
| |
A new Community Health Centre, located on Herbert Street, provides the second major facility on site. It has a welcoming street frontage and a range of facilities to support local community health services. |
| |
| |
Planning has also commenced on a new $91.8 million Clinical Services Building for Women's & Children's Health, the Severe Burn Injury Unit and Acute Mental Health. It will link seamlessly to the main hospital building via a series of link bridges. The additional 60 beds announced in the 2011 Budget will be accommodated on the upper levels of the building. The new building is due for completion in 2014. |
| |
| |
The new Kolling Building, for medical research and clinical education, was completed in 2008. |
| |
Long-term, there are also plans to revitalise the lower part of the site to create a vibrant new heritage precinct with better links to the nearby business district and railway station. The historic Vanderfield Building would be retained in this area. |
| |
| |
"BUSINESS AS USUAL" DURING CONSTRUCTION |
During construction, it will be business as usual at RNS. For your safety, please observe the safety signage on site, take care when walking and driving around the campus, and follow any instructions from site staff. We appreciate your patience while we complete these vital projects. |
| |
WE WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED |
We will keep you up-to-date about the project, and advise you promptly if we expect any impact from the construction program. Planning and building new health care takes time - we appreciate your patience while we complete these vital projects. |
