ABOUT CENTRAL COAST HEALTH


With currently 789 hospital beds, Central Coast Health meets the health needs of just over 300,000 people in one of the fastest growing regions in the state. The Health Service has 3 hospitals - Gosford, Wyong, Woy Woy and a Health Care Centre at Long Jetty. In addition there are a number of community health centres located throughout the Central Coast.

Central Coast Health offers excellent training in the first two postgraduate years for most careers including general practice. There is also the opportunity to train in a number of specialties. Both Gosford and Wyong Hospitals have received three years accreditation by the NSW Postgraduate Medical Council for the training of junior staff.

 

GOSFORD

Gosford hospital, with 480 beds, is the main acute hospital. It is equipped with a 24/7 Emergency Department and operating theatres. It also has a fully equipped Intensive Care, Coronary Care and Maternity Units, with all major specialties represented except Immunology, Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery.

In 2002 a state of the art Interventional Diagnostic Cardiology Unit was opened. Nuclear medicine is available adjacent to the Hospital. While MRI scanning is also available locally in the private sector. Gosford Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment that will see a new Emergency Department, more operating theatres and new wards.

 

WYONG

Wyong Shire is one of the fastest growing areas of NSW. Wyong Hospital is 30 KMS north of Gosford. Currently Wyong Hospital has a total of 274 beds comprising of a mixture of Surgery, Medicine, Maternity, Rehabilitation and Aged Care, Drug and Alcohol, Renal Services and a major 50 bed Mental health facility and a range of sub speciality and outpatient services. . The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the state with approximately 40,000 attendances a year. A new hospital was completed in February 2005 at a cost of $86M and when all beds are commissioned the capacity will reach 316 beds. The new hospital also includes an additional 2 Operating Theatres and 1 additional Endoscopy Suite, a Coronary Care Unit, High Dependency Unit , Short Stay Observation Ward, Diagnostic Services , Outpatient Services and a range of improved facilities for patients and staff. The Emergency Department is planned to be redeveloped / refurbished in the near future.

 

WOY WOY

Woy Woy Hospital is 18 km's south of Gosford. There is one general ward where general practitioners care for their own patients with no junior medical staff.

There is a 20-bed rehabilitation unit for rehabilitation of all ages of patients. The younger are under the care of the staff specialist director and the older by one of the Gosford staff geriatricians. Some orthopaedic patients also undergo rehabilitation here. PGY1, 2 and above rotate on 10 week terms to Woy Woy Rehabilitation unit.

 

LONG JETTY HEALTH CARE CENTRE

Long Jetty HospitalThis is a 30 bed sub acute inpatient medical facility catering for general medical and palliative care patients and managed by local general practitioners. The Community Geriatric Team is involved in care of some of the patients.
